I am looking for the best beach for a family vacation. We have done the whole Florida thing so that is out! I want: clear water, soft (prefer white) beach, nice waters for swimming. Mostly we just want to lay on the beach for a week! Scenery is most important! We won't be doing any scuba diving, rock climbing or anything crazy. I visited Hurghada on the shores of the Red Sea in Feb. of '98 and I could swear coral reef color patterns were a lot more vivid and varied than what I saw during my recent visit in September of '07. I am wondering if water tempearture changes have an effect on their colors, or what I saw is the result of erosion due to excessive snorkeling and scuba diving.

We are going on a cruise over spring break. The port excursions sound like fun -- but the prices are ridiculous! (My husband has already decided to splurge on SCUBA diving, one day.) Does anyone have cost-effective suggestions for either -- or both -- of the two ports we're stopping in:

I'm headed to the Great Barrier Reef with two friends, and we'll be there for five full days (Dec 19 to Dec 25). We're staying in Port Douglas (at "Dougies"), and we aren't currently planning on renting a car (though it's an open possibility). None of us have been snorkeling or scuba diving before.

The girls head to Finland to do a little diving with Suunto (www.suunto.com They stopped at Hanko Diving (www.hankodiving.fi to pick up some new Whites Drysuits (www.whitesdiving.com and Aqua Lung BCDs and Regulators (www.aqualung.com Then off to the rocky island to a dive site called Hauensuoli for their very first Finland dive. The water was a chilly 39 degrees but the wreck was worth all the cold!
